In the MOMent (Early Years): A Mindfulness and Parenting Program for Mothers of Young Children (ages 4 and under)
Coming soon to Duke Integrative Medicine

Being the mother of a preschool age child is challenging. Your child is growing and changing at warp speed. What worked yesterday doesn't work today. Some days your preschooler is hanging on your leg when you try to leave the room and others she's pushing you away with an emphatic, "I do" - of course when you're in a hurry and really need to get on that coat. And forget about "me time" - your life seems to revolve around your child, your partner, your housework, your job. It's enough to make anyone feel stressed, anxious, or even depressed.

Research has shown that mindfulness training helps mothers to cope with the everyday stress and emotional challenges associated with parenting. In fact, studies have shown that mothers who practice mindfulness report greater happiness with parenting. Research also shows that having more information about child development increases both parenting skills and feelings of competence. Thus, this workshop is designed to give mothers of young children skills in both mindfulness practice and age appropriate parenting strategies. In this day-long workshop you will:

  • Learn about informal and formal mindfulness practice
  • Be introduced to three different types of formal mindfulness practices
  • Practice applying mindfulness principles to daily interactions with your child
  • Increase your knowledge of stages of development in early childhood
  • Identify parenting values and apply these values to discipline choices
  • Rediscover the importance - and the fun - of playing with your child
  • Receive support from your instructors and fellow participant mothers
